The Laurie Starling Scholarship for Innovation and Excellence in Automotive Fabrication.

Laurie Starling, who died on 24th July 2014 aged 29, is widely known and highly respected for his innovative contributions to the automotive fabrication industry. The Scholarship in his name has been made possible, over the years, through funds being donated by the Starling family, many individuals, Milwaukee Tools, businesses and organisations. Our collective goal is to foster Laurie’s values in:

  • pursuing knowledge, skills and innovations with enthusiastic dedication and contributing to the profession of Custom Vehicle Fabrication,
  • continuing his attitude of openness and generous manner in sharing his knowledge and experience with others, and
  • encouraging and supporting those beginning their journey in the profession.

The Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis at SummerNats.

Application for the Scholarship is open to Australian citizens or Permanent Residents:

Student: enrolled in an accredited tertiary vocation institute e.g. TAFE. Applicants will have completed at least the first year of a Certificate III or IV or a Diploma in or directly related to Vehicle Fabrication or Degree with application to Vehicle design and fabrication.

The Scholarship will be for a sum of $4,000.

Student Scholarship: requires a commitment from the recipient to continue in his/her studies to the completion of the Certificate,  Diploma or Degree in which he/she is enrolled.

Also a report is required on their work and an example piece of fabrication that will demonstrate innovation and excellence in vehicle fabrication to be displayed on a stand at SummerNats the year following acceptance of the Award. Additionally the completed work will be shown on the Laurie Award website (

How to Apply:

Applications will be in writing (see Applications to include) with photographs of examples of the applicant’s own work, include details of the courses completed towards the relevant Certificate and/or Diploma, and/or Degree and the names and contact details for two referees.

Applications must be received by 5pm on Friday 15th December 2023.

The final decision will be made by the family based on advice from Meguiar’s Judges from SummerNats and MotorEx.

The announcement will be made at SummerNats 36 in January 2024.
